I am working under the assumption that Henry's MBP and MBA are 2012 or newer models since TB2 he mentions only occur on 2014 Mac laptops (exception 2013 13' MBP), which have USB3 type A ports and thus something as simple as this suffices ($20 from Apple): While not inexpensive by any means, I think the combination would work: I'd place a pretty high bet on his MBA and MBP having USB3 ports.

Of course his MBA would have TB1 in that case, but isn't that the same connector? Maybe Henry has the same MacBook Air so that is why he asked for TB2 to USB-C. Not sure from what year it was, probably 2011.

My MacBook Air (replaced by a MacBook Pro now) had Thunderbolt and USB2 only, not USB3. Which as you point out will likely already be in the box of USB-C drives. While Henry associated USB-C with TB3 and thus was worried about whether a TB2 port could be used to connect a USB-C peripheral, all Mac laptops since 2012 have USB3 (type A) ports, and thus the only thing needed is a USB 3 (A) to USB-C cable. A USB-C disk often already contains such a cable as well.

You would need a TB2 to USB3 adapter, and a USB3 to USB-C cable. I planning to get one of the new MBPs later in the year, but in the mean time, I was wondering, is it possible to use a USB-C drive with thunderbolt 2 Macs? I have a MacBook Air and Pro that I would need to use the drive with as well as the new MacBook. I was looking into a new, faster hard drive for editing images and video, and USB-C seemed like the best long term option when it comes to speed.
